Fence installation cost calculator

This fence installation cost calculator takes the length and material and returns a typical Hammond-area installed range, with tear-out, walk gates and the permit for your city as separate lines. No contact details needed, and the result updates as you go. It comes from Palisades Hammond Fence, which installs fences across Hammond, LA and nearby towns.

City of Hammond fence permit

The City of Hammond requires a fence permit before a fence goes up, with the design and its place on a survey or parcel map approved by the city (Unified Development Code 4.1.8). The fee schedule lists $10 for a residential fence permit ($50 commercial), and the fee doubles if work starts before the permit is issued. Permits: (985) 277-5655. Permit fee: $10, on top of the range above.

Where your fence may fall

  • Good to knowFlat, open fence lines with one gate sit at the low end of the pine range. Shadow-box styles, wet or root-filled ground and an old fence to remove push it up.
  • Good to knowThe privacy ranges describe a 6 ft fence, so your height matches them.
  • Toward the low endA flat, dry, open line points toward the low end.
  • Good to knowOld posts set in concrete push tear-out toward the top of its range; a wood fence on bare posts sits lower.

Taken together, your answers point toward the low end of the range.

These are typical Hammond-area budgeting ranges, not a quote. The permit, driveway gates, staining and any survey sit outside the range. The price for your fence comes after someone walks the line.

How the estimate works

The fence line is the length you enter times a typical Hammond-area installed range per linear foot for the material: materials and labor together, at normal access. Tear-out adds its own per-foot range, and each walk gate adds $150 to $600. Nothing else changes the dollar figures.

Fence typeTypical installed range per linear foot
Pine privacy, 6 ft, pressure-treated$15 to $45
Cedar privacy, 6 ft$22 to $55
Vinyl privacy, 6 ft$20 to $60
Chain link, residential, galvanized$10 to $30
Aluminum$25 to $55
Steel or wrought iron$30 to $100 or more
Aluminum pool barrier$25 to $55
Tear-out and haul-away of an old fence$2 to $8
Standard walk gate$150 to $600 each

These are budgeting ranges, not quotes. Steel and wrought iron have no fixed top, because custom scrollwork, columns and on-site welding run past any figure. Height, wet ground, a slope or ditch crossing, roots and a long hand carry each add a note saying which end of the range they push toward. There is no honest way to turn those into a percentage, so the calculator doesn't.

Some items have no dependable per-foot figure: driveway and sliding gates, gate openers, board-on-board styles, black vinyl-coated chain link, and staining. They appear as "priced on site" lines with what drives their cost.

The permit line

Inside Hammond city limits, a fence needs a permit from the Building Department before it goes up. The fee schedule in the city's Unified Development Code lists $10 for a residential fence permit and $50 for a commercial one, and the fee doubles if work starts before the permit is issued. The calculator shows it as its own line, outside the range.

The City of Covington's fence permit application carries a $5 fee, according to the City of Covington. Mandeville, the smaller towns and the unincorporated parishes set their own rules, so the permit and its fee are confirmed per address. The fence permit checker sorts out which rules apply.

Why local prices sit where they do

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a fence-erector wage for the Hammond metro. Statewide, Louisiana fence erectors earn a mean $19.92 an hour, about 18% below the $24.29 national mean, and construction laborers in the Hammond metro average $19.63 an hour against $25.02 nationally. A wage is not a billing rate: an installed price also carries materials, equipment, insurance, licensing, disposal and overhead.

Methodology

The per-foot ranges are typical Hammond-area budgeting ranges for installed fences, reviewed against regional and national pricing and kept wide where sources disagree; no single company's prices set them. Permit fees come from the City of Hammond and the City of Covington, and wage figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The calculator does not use square footage, lot size, soil tests or any multiplier.

What the range leaves out

  • The permit fee, shown as its own line
  • Driveway, sliding and automatic gates, priced on site
  • Staining or sealing new wood
  • A property survey when the line is in doubt
  • Clearing brush or trees along the line, and restoring the yard after
