Ornamental aluminum fencing around Hammond typically costs $25 to $55 per linear foot installed. An aluminum pool barrier falls in the same $25 to $55 range before its gate hardware, and ornamental steel or wrought iron runs $30 to $100 or more. A standard walk gate adds $150 to $600 each. Height, picket spacing, slope and gate count decide where a job lands.
Palisades Hammond Fence installs aluminum, steel and wrought iron fences in Hammond and across Tangipahoa Parish, western St. Tammany and eastern Livingston Parish. Installation is carried out by licensed and insured fence contractors. These are typical Hammond-area ranges for budgeting, not company prices. This guide covers why aluminum is so often chosen for front yards and pools here, how it compares with steel, and the parts of an aluminum job that move its price. The fence installation cost guide compares every type.
Aluminum, steel and iron compared
| Ornamental aluminum | Ornamental steel or wrought iron | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical installed range | $25 to $55 per foot | $30 to $100 or more per foot |
| Weight and strength | Light; panels flex if struck hard | Heavy and rigid; better for security and wide gates |
| Rust | Does not rust; the powder coat protects the look | Rusts where the coating is scratched; needs touch-up |
| Custom work | Stock panels and heights | Scrollwork, columns and on-site welding |
| Slope | Many panels rack to follow a grade | Usually stepped or custom-fitted |
| Where it is chosen | Front yards, pool barriers, see-through yard fences | Estate fronts, driveway gates, historic replacements |
The top of the steel range is open because custom fabrication has no ceiling. Standard steel panels start near the bottom of that band; columns, scrollwork and welded gates move it up. The wrought iron fence page covers that work.
What moves an aluminum job within its range
Height and picket spacing
A 4 ft fence uses shorter posts and panels than a 5 or 6 ft fence. Closer picket spacing for small dogs, or a “puppy picket” bottom section, adds pickets per panel. Pool barriers set the spacing for you.
Slope and stepping
Rackable panels follow a gentle grade so the bottom rail stays close to the ground. Where the ground is steeper than the panel can rack, sections are stepped, which takes longer posts and leaves gaps under each step to close. Ditch banks along a street are a common place for that change.
Gates and posts
Gates are where aluminum fences fail, because a light post can twist under a swinging leaf. Gate posts are often heavier gauge, set deeper, and fitted with self-closing hinges where needed. Each gate is priced on top of the fence, and a gate that drags or droops later becomes a gate repair job. Driveway gates in aluminum or steel are scoped separately in the gate cost guide.
Mounting and ground
Most posts are set in concrete in the ground, and the post spacing is fixed by the panel width, commonly about 6 ft, so a run cannot simply be stretched to save posts. Posts mounted on an existing slab or pool deck use a base plate and anchors instead. Around Hammond, the USDA soil survey maps mostly poorly drained silt loams with a shallow seasonal water table (USDA NRCS), so post holes can fill with water, and footings are shaped so water runs away from the post.
Front yards and the height limit
Inside the City of Hammond, a fence in front of the house may be wood, metal other than chain link, wrought iron, simulated wrought iron or masonry, and no taller than 4 ft. Within 30 ft of a street intersection, nothing over 3 ft may stand (City of Hammond UDC). Aluminum meets the material rule and comes in stock 3 and 4 ft heights, which is why it is the common choice for a Hammond front.
Nearby rules differ. Mandeville’s code, as quoted in its 2023 staff reports, lets decorative wrought iron in front setbacks reach 5.5 ft; see the Mandeville page. Covington’s historic district asks for new metal front fences under 3 ft, covered on the Covington page. In Hammond’s Historic District, a street-facing fence also needs Historic District Commission review.
Pool barriers
An aluminum pool fence uses the same panels with tighter rules. Louisiana adopts the International Residential Code, whose pool section points to the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, so barrier height, gaps and gate hardware follow that standard; confirm the details with the local building official before ordering.
Hammond also lists a separate swimming pool permit. The Louisiana pool fence requirements guide covers the rules, and the price effect is mostly in the gates: self-closing hinges, a self-latching latch mounted high, and often more gates than a yard fence has.
Upkeep after the fence is in
Aluminum’s later costs are small, which is part of what the installed price buys. The powder coat needs an occasional wash, and a scratch that reaches bare metal does not rust the way steel does.
Steel and iron are different: a chip in the coating lets rust start, and over the years the fence needs sanding, priming and repainting at the damaged spots. With about 64 inches of rain a year in the Hammond area (NOAA), that upkeep comes around sooner on a steel fence than on an aluminum one. No rebate or grant applies to either.
Compare quotes on the panel style and height, post gauge and spacing, how posts are set, gate hardware, removal of any old fence, the permit and cleanup. A cheaper aluminum quote often means a lighter panel or a lighter gate post, and the gate is where that shows first. If you are still choosing a material, the vinyl fence cost guide covers the solid alternative.
What’s inside a Hammond aluminum fence price
| Part of the price | What sets it | Public figure or what to check |
|---|---|---|
| Installer wages | Local pay and hours on site | Louisiana fence erectors: mean $19.92 an hour vs $24.29 nationally, about 18% lower (BLS); Hammond-metro construction laborers: $19.63 vs $25.02, about 22% lower |
| Panels, posts and gates | Height, style, picket spacing, color | No public local price list; ask for panel style and post gauge on the quote |
| Front-yard design | Hammond UDC 4.1.8 | 4 ft maximum in front; 3 ft within 30 ft of an intersection |
| Fence permit | Hammond UDC Appendix H | $10 residential, $50 commercial; the fee doubles for work begun without a permit |
| Pool permit | Hammond UDC 3.1.2 | Required separately for a pool; fee confirmed with the Building Department |
| Contractor credential | LSLBC | Home improvement registration for residential jobs over $7,500 (LSLBC) |
| Removal of an old fence | Post setting | $2 to $8 per foot |
A wage is not a billing rate. Materials, insurance, licensing, vehicles and overhead sit in the per-foot price too.

Illustrative arithmetic, not quotes.
| Example | How it adds up | Illustrative total |
|---|---|---|
| 120 ft of 4 ft aluminum across a front yard, one walk gate | $3,000 to $6,600 plus $150 to $600 | $3,150 to $7,200 |
| 100 ft of aluminum pool barrier | $2,500 to $5,500 | $2,500 to $5,500 plus self-closing gates |
| 120 ft of standard steel ornamental, one walk gate | $3,600 to $12,000 or more plus $150 to $600 | $3,750 to $12,600 or more |
