Residential chain link around Hammond typically costs $10 to $30 per linear foot installed for 4 to 6 ft galvanized fence. A 4 ft galvanized run across open ground sits near the bottom; 6 ft fabric, black vinyl-coated systems and privacy slats sit at or above the top. Each walk gate adds $150 to $600, and removing an old fence $2 to $8 per foot.
Palisades Hammond Fence installs residential and commercial chain link fences in Hammond and across Tangipahoa Parish, western St. Tammany and eastern Livingston Parish. Installation is carried out by licensed and insured fence contractors. The ranges on this page are typical Hammond-area figures for budgeting, not company prices. Chain link prices differently from wood or vinyl: the fabric is cheap, while the posts, rails and fixed setup costs make up much of the job. See the fence installation cost guide for every fence type compared.
How a chain link price is built
A chain link fence is posts, a top rail, fabric and the fittings that hold them together. Line posts sit along the run; larger terminal posts at ends, corners and gates take the fabric’s tension. That split explains most of the price.
| Component | What it does | Why it moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal posts | Anchor the stretched fabric at ends, corners and gates | Larger pipe and bigger footings; every corner adds two pulls |
| Line posts | Carry the fabric between terminals | Spacing and pipe size set how many and how heavy |
| Top rail | Ties the posts together and stiffens the top | Heavier rail resists bending from falling limbs |
| Fabric | The woven wire mesh | Height, wire gauge and galvanized vs coated |
| Tension wire or bottom rail | Holds the bottom edge | Matters for dogs that push under the fence |
| Fittings | Bands, caps, tension bars, ties | Small parts, but many of them on a fence with corners |
| Gates | Framed leaves on heavier posts | Each gate adds posts, hinges and a latch |
The City of Hammond sets a floor for wire fences: supports of galvanized pipe at least 1.5 in across, spaced no more than 7 ft apart (City of Hammond UDC). A quote built to that spacing has more posts than a fence spaced at 10 ft, and that is part of the price, not padding.
Why short runs and corners cost more per foot
Homeowners report receiving quotes for a short section of chain link that work out to several times the usual per-foot range. The reason is fixed cost. The site visit, the permit, the Louisiana 811 request, loading material, two terminal posts and a gate cost close to the same whether the fence is 20 ft or 200 ft. On a short run those costs are divided by very few feet.
Corners act the same way. Each one is a terminal post with braces, set deeper than a line post, and an L-shaped back yard can have four or five. On a straight 250 ft line the fixed parts fade into the per-foot figure; on a 60 ft run with three corners and a gate, they dominate it.
Galvanized, coated and slatted
Bare galvanized is the base of the range. Black or green vinyl-coated systems coat the fabric, posts and rails, which costs more and is usually chosen for looks. There is no separate dependable local range for coated chain link, so treat it as at or above the top of the residential band and price it from the spec. Privacy slats woven through the fabric add material, labor and wind load: a slatted fence catches far more wind than open mesh, so posts may need to go deeper.
The ground matters for any of these. The soils mapped around Hammond are mostly poorly drained silt loams with a seasonal water table close to the surface (USDA NRCS). On low lots, galvanized and coated fittings both resist corrosion better than plain steel, and footings that shed water protect the post base.
What’s inside a Hammond chain link price
| Part of the price | What sets it | Public figure or what to check |
|---|---|---|
| Labor | Local wages and hours on site | BLS has no Hammond-metro figure for fence erectors; the Louisiana mean is $19.92 an hour versus $24.29 nationally, about 18% lower. Construction laborers in the Hammond metro average $19.63 against $25.02, about 22% lower (BLS OEWS) |
| Pipe, fabric and fittings | Height, gauge, coating, post sizes | No public local price list; ask for post sizes on the quote |
| Post spec | Hammond UDC 4.1.8 | Galvanized pipe at least 1.5 in, no more than 7 ft apart |
| Permit | Hammond UDC Appendix H | $10 residential, $50 commercial; doubled if work begins first |
| State per-permit fee | LUCCC Resolution 2026-01 under Act 881 | A $10 state fee on permits issued by local governments; whether it applies to a fence permit is confirmed with the permit office (LUCCC) |
| 811 locate | La. R.S. 40:1749.13 | 48 to 120 hours before digging, weekends and holidays excluded |
| Tear-out | Old posts and footings | $2 to $8 per foot |
A wage is not a billing rate: the installed price also pays for materials, equipment, insurance, licensing, disposal and overhead.

Inside Hammond, add the $10 residential permit. A coated or slatted version of any row is priced from its spec.
Commercial and security chain link
Commercial work has no dependable per-foot band here. It is priced from fence height, fabric gauge, post diameter and wall, the gate widths, any barbed-wire arms and access control.
Hammond’s code allows open wire fences up to 10 ft in commercial and industrial districts and keeps barbed wire out of residential districts; Mandeville’s code, as quoted in 2023 staff reports, allows barbed wire only in certain business and industrial districts and only above 6 ft. See commercial fence installation for how those jobs are scoped, and the gate cost guide for rolling and swing gates.
Getting chain link priced
Measure the run, count corners and gates, and note any old fence to remove. The fence cost estimator returns a range from those inputs without a phone call. If a dog is the reason for the fence, the best fence for dogs guide covers bottom tension wire and dig barriers, and the chain link vs wood guide compares the two. A fence that sits on a shared line raises ownership questions covered in the Louisiana fence laws guide. For a written scope, see chain link fence installation or call (985) 866-3827.
