A 6 ft privacy fence around Hammond typically costs $15 to $45 per linear foot installed in pressure-treated pine, $22 to $55 in cedar and $20 to $60 in vinyl. A standard walk gate adds $150 to $600, and removing an old fence adds $2 to $8 per foot. Board-on-board, 8 ft and horizontal styles are priced from their scope.
Palisades Hammond Fence installs wood and vinyl privacy fences in Hammond and across Tangipahoa Parish, western St. Tammany and eastern Livingston Parish. Installation is carried out by licensed and insured fence contractors. These are typical Hammond-area ranges for budgeting, not company prices. This guide covers what is special about pricing a solid fence: the wind it catches, the height limits that cap it, and the costs that sit outside the per-foot number. The broader fence installation cost guide compares every fence type side by side.
Privacy fence prices by material
Each figure covers material and labor for a 6 ft fence on a normal residential lot. The low end belongs to a straight, dry, open run with one gate; the high end to a line with corners, wet holes, roots, tear-out or several gates.
| Privacy style | Typical installed range | What pushes it up |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure-treated pine, dog-ear or flat-top | $15 to $45 per foot | Cap and trim boards, steel posts, wet or root-filled post holes |
| Cedar boards on treated or steel posts | $22 to $55 per foot | Clear or select grades, cap and trim, a stained finish |
| Vinyl privacy panels | $20 to $60 per foot | Heavier profiles, woodgrain texture, aluminum post stiffeners |
| Board-on-board or shadowbox | Priced from scope | Roughly half again as many boards per foot and a fully closed face |
| Horizontal board | Priced from scope | Board grade, tighter post spacing to stop rails sagging, trim |
| 8 ft solid privacy | Priced from scope | Longer, deeper posts and more wind load at every post |
Cedar costs more than pine mainly for the boards. The posts under a cedar fence are usually the same ground-contact treated pine or galvanized steel, because cedar sapwood in wet soil does not outlast a treated post. The pine vs cedar guide explains that trade, and the vinyl fence cost guide goes deeper on vinyl profiles.
Why a solid face costs more to hold up
A picket or chain link fence lets wind pass through. A privacy fence stops it, so the full pressure on a 6 ft by 8 ft bay is handed to two posts and levered against the soil at the ground line. Around Hammond that soil is often wet: the USDA soil survey maps mostly poorly drained silt loams, with the seasonal water table within about 9 inches of the surface at the median point sampled (USDA NRCS). Wet silt gives a post less grip just when the wind is hardest.
That is where privacy money goes. Contractors answer the load with deeper holes, wider footings, gravel at the base so water drains, closer post spacing or steel posts, and each of those adds to the per-foot price. A quote that looks cheap for a solid fence often has fewer, shallower posts. The wind-resistant fence page shows how the post plan changes for storms, and the wet clay soil guide covers setting posts in wet ground.
Height rules that set the size of the job
Height is a cost driver, and in this area it is also a legal limit. Inside the City of Hammond, the Unified Development Code allows solid fences up to 8 ft from the front of the house back, and caps front-yard fences at 4 ft. Height is measured from the lower side of the fence, so a run along a raised bed or a ditch bank can lose usable height on the high side (City of Hammond UDC).
Other towns write different numbers. Mandeville’s code, as quoted in 2023 city staff reports, sets 7 ft for side and rear yards; in Covington’s historic district, back-yard board fences stop at 6 ft. The Mandeville and Covington pages cover each, and the fence permits guide explains who issues what. Recorded subdivision restrictions can be stricter than any of these, so check them before choosing a height.
What’s inside a Hammond privacy fence price
| Part of the price | What sets it | Public figure or what to check |
|---|---|---|
| Labor | Hours on site and local pay | Louisiana fence erectors earn a mean $19.92 an hour, about 18% under the $24.29 national mean; Hammond-metro construction laborers average $19.63 against $25.02 nationally, about 22% lower (BLS OEWS). BLS publishes no Hammond fence-erector figure |
| Boards, posts, rails and fasteners | Species or vinyl profile, post size, hardware grade | No public local price list; read the material list on the quote |
| City permit | Hammond UDC Appendix H | $10 for a home, $50 for a commercial property; doubled if work begins before the permit |
| Code design limits | Hammond UDC 4.1.8 | 4 ft in front, 8 ft behind the front line, 3 ft within 30 ft of an intersection; wood must be weatherproofed |
| Utility locate | La. R.S. 40:1749.13 | Louisiana 811 notified 48 to 120 hours before digging, weekends and holidays excluded; schedule, not cost |
| Tear-out | How the old fence was set | $2 to $8 per foot, more where old posts sit in concrete |
| Stain or sealer | One face or two, product, wood age | Priced from scope; vinyl skips it |
A wage is not a billing rate: the installed price also carries materials, vehicles, insurance, licensing, disposal and overhead. The BLS figures show that labor here costs less than the national level, not what a contractor charges per hour.
Illustrative privacy fence budgets
These examples multiply the ranges above. They are illustrative arithmetic, not quotes.
| Example | Fence | Gates and extras | Illustrative total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 180 ft of 6 ft pine, two walk gates | $2,700 to $8,100 | $300 to $1,200 | $3,000 to $9,300 |
| 180 ft of 6 ft cedar, two walk gates | $3,960 to $9,900 | $300 to $1,200 | $4,260 to $11,100 |
| 180 ft of 6 ft vinyl, two walk gates | $3,600 to $10,800 | $300 to $1,200 | $3,900 to $12,000 |
| Any of the above replacing an old wood fence | As above | Add $360 to $1,440 tear-out | Add to the row |
Every row crosses the $7,500 line at its upper end, which is where the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors requires a home improvement registration for residential work (LSLBC). Inside Hammond city limits, add the $10 permit.
Costs that sit outside the per-foot number
A shared line
A privacy fence is often built on or near the line with a neighbor. Louisiana Civil Code article 685 presumes a boundary fence is common to both owners, and where both lots are already enclosed, either owner can compel the other to contribute to building and repairing it. That can lower your share, but only by agreement or a claim, and it also makes the fence partly theirs. Building a few inches inside your own line keeps it yours. The Louisiana fence laws guide explains both choices.
Finish and upkeep
Pine needs a stain or sealer once it dries, and that finish needs renewing every few years in about 64 inches of rain and 86 days at or above 90°F a year (NOAA). That is a later cost wood carries and vinyl does not; fence staining is priced from the fence’s height, faces and condition.
Dogs, pools and gates
A privacy fence built for a dog may need boards run closer to grade or a dig barrier, covered in the best fence for dogs guide. Pool barriers have their own gate hardware rules. Extra walk gates add their own heavier hinge posts and hardware; double drive gates are priced separately in the gate cost guide.
